Aussie households to have 20 smart devices by 2019
The average Australian household will have 20 connected devices by 2019, eBay Australia and Telsyte have predicted.
The companies' latest trend forecast shows that Australians have a voracious appetite for gadgets. Mobile device penetration is at 74%, and devices such as wearables are also seeing strong traction.
In addition, more than one in every 10 dollars being spent on consumer electronics in Australia is being spent online, the report shows.
Based on sales trends, eBay predicts that there will be an ultra HD TV in the average Australian living room by 2019 and that medical implants connected to the internet will be commonplace by this time.
Globally, more than 50% of active eBay customers last year made a purchase in the technology category. Consumers also made over 100 million searches for electronics and gadgets.
Sales of wearables are also surging. Last year sales of smart wristbands soared 50,000% even before the product category reached the mainstream market.
The report also shows that 4.8 million Australians have a smart TV. Adoption is correlated with income, with 40% of households with an annual income of over $200,000 owning such a device.
Products to transform ordinary TVs into smart TVs, such as Apple TV or Chromecast, are meanwhile becoming more popular.
