VMWare vCloud Director, vShield, vFabric, View 4.5

Wednesday, 15 September, 2010

VMWare has announced products and services including vCloud Director, vShield, vCloud Datacenter and Consulting Services for cloud infrastructure and management; vFabric cloud application platform; and View desktop management.

By extending the resource pooling capabilities of vSphere, vCloud Director enables IT to create virtual data centres (VDCs) - logical pools of compute, network and storage resources with defined management policies, SLAs and pricing. IT organisations can offer these VDCs - along with catalogues of other infrastructure and application services such as virtual appliances, VMs and OS images - to users through fully automated self-service access.

The vShield product range includes Edge, App and Endpoint virtualise security and edge services, including firewall, VPN and load balancing, eliminating the complexity and rigidity of traditional approaches and enabling VMware-virtualised and cloud environments that are more secure than the traditional, physical deployment model.

vCloud Datacenter Services enable enterprises to extend their data centres to external clouds, while preserving security, compliance and quality of service. Delivered by service providers, including Bluelock, Colt, SingTel, Terremark and Verizon, the services will use globally consistent infrastructure, management and security models to make it possible for enterprise customers to move computing workloads from internal virtualised infrastructure to an external cloud and back.

vCloud Consulting Services assist enterprises and service providers to build cloud architectures, and provide assessment, planning, design and deployment services.

The vFabric cloud application platform enables developers to build and run modern applications that intelligently share information with underlying infrastructure to maximise application performance, quality of service and infrastructure utilisation. It combines the Spring Java development framework with platform services including lightweight application server, global data management, cloud-ready messaging, dynamic load balancing and application performance management. Applications built on the platform provide performance and portability across heterogeneous cloud environments.

View 4.5 desktop management provides a simplified integrated desktop and application management platform designed to enable management of tens of thousands of virtual desktops. Users can work with their virtual desktops over a LAN or WAN connection, while View with Local Mode enables secure offline access.
