Internode demos fetchtv IPTV service over the NBN

ISP Internode became the first company to deliver the fetchtv IPTV service over the NBN, when it showcased the service at the nation’s first broad-acre NBN deployment located at Doonside, in Sydney’s west.

NBN Co and the federal government recently announced that residents in Bunya Estate - which is expected to ultimately feature 730 homes - would be the first people in a broad-acre development to have access to the NBN.

“Bunya is not a trial site, the display homes in this estate have been connected to the NBN and have live telephone and high-speed internet services delivered over the NBN fibre network. Residential houses are in the final stages of completion on site and new residents will have access to services delivered over the NBN as soon as they move in,” said NBN Co CEO Mike Quigley.

Internode showcased the fetchtv service during a visit to stage one of the Bunya Estate by Quigley and the federal Minister for Broadband, Stephen Conroy.

Although the multicast service that’s typically used to provide IPTV is not scheduled for release on the NBN until mid2012, Internode said it had designed a delivery system that allows it to provide fetchtv now.

“Rather than wait for the NBN to deliver multicast, we have worked out how to use existing technology to deliver high-quality video-on-demand using fetchtv over the NBN,” said Internode product manager Jim Kellett.

“It completes the triple play of data, voice and video,” Kellett said.
