Consent survey for parents closing soon

Almost 3000 parents and carers have completed an online survey about how they can be supported to talk about consent with their children.

With just a few days left left to provide feedback, the survey has been designed to help the Department of Education understand how it can support parents and carers to build on what is already taught in NSW schools.

“The online survey is just one way the Department is engaging with parents and carers on this important topic,” said Education Secretary Georgina Harrisson.

“Over the past two months we have also held 10 focus group sessions with parents and carers, and we are anticipating results in early January.”

The survey and focus group results will help guide the Department’s planning and development of support and resources, which will assist all parents and carers in NSW, including those in independent and Catholic school communities.

The focus groups have included:

• three focus groups in partnership with the NSW P&C, including one session with parents of students with disability;
• six focus groups held in five different languages, in partnership with the Ethnic Communities Council; and
• a focus group with Aboriginal parents and carers.
   

The online survey has been designed to capture a broad and diverse range of parent and carer views, including culturally and linguistically diverse parents and carers, and those with children and young people with disability.

It is open until 15 December and is available in 10 community languages: Arabic, Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Korean, Persian, Turkish, Swahili, Urdu and Khmer.
