STEM in the spotlight at Amaroo School

Canberra's Amaroo School celebrated all things science, technology, engineering and mathematics at its annual STEM education night last term. The theme for the event was 'Women in STEM', and it was supported by an ACT Government 'Girls in STEM' grant.

Organised by older students, the night featured presentations and hands-on activities including race cars powered by a CO2 canister, miniature catapults and a mock forensics lab.

Australian National University took part, giving a presentation on the forces of gravity, and attendees also got to see a functional student-built robotic arm in action and a close-up look at a 3D printer. A science presentation from Fizzics Education rounded out the night.

By inviting parents to attend, the Amaroo School STEM Education and Digital Technologies teams hope to illustrate the possibilities open to students and highlight STEM pathways.

The teams will continue to promote the benefits of STEM classes to all students as an interesting, rewarding and relevant way to build skills that will be invaluable in the future.
