Better broadband for rural Victoria

RFPs have been issued for the construction and delivery of enhanced broadband services in Morwell, North Geelong and Horsham.

Victoria’s Acting Minister for Regional Development, Jacinta Allan, said this was a major step forward in the project.

The aim is to test solutions to boost broadband for those businesses in, or considering investments in, regional Victoria.

“We’re making sure regional Victorians have access to reliable broadband — to support farmers, local businesses and families,” said Allan.

“Our Regional Partnerships told us that digital connectivity and access was an absolute must — we’ve listened and we’re making it a priority.”

The Victoria Government has allocated $7 million for regional enhanced broadband projects in Morwell, North Geelong and Horsham.

The effort is part of the overall $45 million Connecting Regional Communities Program.

Although enhanced broadband solutions can be delivered via a range of technologies, the RFP encourages fibre and other innovative solutions.

The pilots are expected to begin in the second half of 2018, with completion in the second half of 2019.
