Data61 and AICD to boost boards' digital literacy

The CSIRO’s data innovation arm, Data61, and the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) have agreed to collaborate to improve the digital and cyber literacy of directors and boards nationwide.

The two organisations will aim to provide boards with a better understanding of cybersecurity, risk management, required investments and the opportunities for innovation in the area.

As part of the collaboration, Data61 and the AICD will develop a cybersecurity education and training program focused on corporate governance.

With the program the organisations aim to give directors the opportunity to identify the value of information to their organisation in terms of business opportunity and risk, while identifying a target state of risk assurance.

The project also aims to help boards measure the current capability of their organisation to protect its valuable information and develop quantifiable programs for ensuring continuous organisation improvement.

Data61 CEO Adrian Turner commented that cybersecurity is a significant issue for company boards and for the whole country.

“Australia is facing a major challenge as a result of digital disruption and our changing economy. CSIRO, and with it Data61, are focused on preparing the country for these changes,” he said.

“Directors globally have expressed concern at the rapid pace of digital change, increased cyber threats, technical jargon and associated risks as limiting their ability to appropriately fulfil their duties. It is the board’s responsibility to drive innovation and strategy which will flourish with positive leadership, a coherent strategy and proactive information governance.”
