DX to top the agenda for Aussie CIOs

Digital transformation will remain the top priority for Australian IT executives over the next few years as the digital economy reaches a tipping point, IDC has predicted.

The research firm has released its top predictions for the Australian IT industry for 2018 and beyond, including the forecast that at least 60% of Australia’s GDP will be digitised by 2021.

Growth in every industry will be driven by digitally enhanced offerings operations and relationships, IDC said.

As a result, by 2020, IDC expects half of AU500 companies to have fully developed an organisation-wide digital transformation strategy.

By 2019, half of such digital transformation initiatives will involve artificial intelligence services and by 2021 85% of commercial enterprise apps are expected to use AI.

By 2020, 80% of large Australian enterprises are expected to be generating revenue from data as a service, up from just 35% last year.

Spending on cloud services, hardware and software is also set to continue to increase, more than doubling to $9.8 billion by 2021.

On the application front, IDC predicts that by 2021 enterprise apps will shift towards “hyper-agile” architecture, with 85% of application development on cloud platforms utilising microservices and cloud functions.

By 2021, at least 25% of ASX organisations are also expected to adopt blockchain as the key to their digital trust initiatives, while more than half will see an average of 45% of their digital services interactions come through their open API ecosystems.

The rise of low and no code development tools will also see non-tech-focused developers building 20% of business applications and 30% of new application features by 2021, IDC said.

“The digitalisation phenomenon will continue to push DX as the top priority for IT executives, as innovation through DX is permanently reshaping the future of Australian organisations,” IDC Australia Senior Research Manager Sabharinath Bala said.

“The pace at which organisations generate digitally enhanced products and services will amplify their reach in the market and be key to their success.”
