Is Chrome now the most popular browser everywhere?
It’s fairly well established now that Google Chrome is a more popular web browser than Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, but what you may not know is that Chrome is becoming the go-to mobile browser — even for iOS users, where the default is Safari.
Adobe has revealed in its Google I/O Digital Index Report that, after surveying 1000 US consumers about their device use — including browser preference — users are opting for Chrome over other browsing experiences regardless of their device.
“iPhone users have to go out of their way to download the Chrome browser,” said Adam Lloyd, an analyst at ADI. “The fact that people are actually doing so is a sign that Chrome offers an experience consumers are interested in.”
According to Adobe, Chrome usage has grown 77% year over year (YOY) on Android devices and 20% YOY on iOS devices. Millennials in particular reportedly sway heavily toward Chrome use, with 60% citing it as their preference.
Lloyd added that survey respondents claimed ‘ease of use’ and ‘speed’ were the two top criteria for browser preference.
“This indicates that consumers are not tied to their OS’s default browser but choose what they see as the best,” said Lloyd.
On desktops, Chrome now has nearly 50% of the browser market, an increase of 5% YOY. Internet Explorer, by comparison, is down to a 24% share and is continuing to decline.
