Report on hiring trends for IT professionals

Approval for new projects will drive an increase in hiring of IT professionals across Australia, according to the latest report from recruitment consultancy Robert Walters.

The Robert Walters Job Market Update found that levels of hiring will vary upon different industry verticals; however, there has been a general return of confidence to the market. In the next six months, many organisations will look at new development projects for internal business systems and corporate websites using .Net, ASP and SharePoint, the report said.

“Organisations will be especially looking for technical professionals who can understand business requirements and deal effectively with a wide range of stakeholders,” said Peter Bateson, Robert Walters Sydney Director of IT. “As IT becomes more ingrained with the wider business, companies want candidates who operate as efficiently in the tech room as they do in the boardroom.”

Robert Walters also conducted a national survey of more than 1200 Australian hiring managers on their recruitment strategies for the next six months. The Hiring Intentions Survey found that:

  • 31% of IT hiring managers are less likely to hire in the next six months, compared to the last six months, while 26% of hiring managers are more likely to hire;
  • 36% of hiring managers will increase wages in the next six months, 60% said salaries will remain the same and 4% said salaries would decrease;
  • 79% of hiring managers are planning on hiring mid-level professionals.
