UK to investigate impact of AI

The UK's House of Lords has established a select committee to consider the economic, ethical and social implications of advances in artificial intelligence (AI).

The committee is seeking written consultations (PDF) from a wide range of stakeholders, including practical solutions to issues presented by AI.

As part of the consultation, the committee will seek to predict how AI is likely to develop over the short, medium and long term; the impact these advances will have on everyday life, jobs, education and retraining needs; and how the public can be best prepared for more widespread use of AI.

The committee will evaluate which industry sectors and societal groups are benefiting the most from the development and use of AI, which groups are gaining the least, and how any disparities can be mitigated.

The consultation also covers whether efforts need to be made to improve public understanding of and engagement with AI.

In addition, the consultation covers the ethical implications of the development and use of AI, as well as the role of the government in the development, use and potential regulation of AI.

Also on the regulatory front, the committee will address potential responses to large companies using ‘data-based monopolies’ for commercial ends, as well as how customer data can be managed and safeguarded to ensure it contributes to the public good.
