Accidental deletion top cause of email recovery

Restoring accidentally deleted messages is the most common request for IT administrators when it comes to email data recovery, according to Kroll Ontrack.

A survey of around 200 users of the data recovery vendor’s email recovery software shows that 45% of requests are due to accidentally deleted data.

Accessing deleted mailboxes or emails is the most common data-recovery request, the survey shows.

Nearly two-thirds of the Australian, German, US and UK users surveyed reported receiving up to five restoration requests a month, and a further 11% receive up to 10 per month.

Besides accidental deletion, the most common data-restoration needs include collecting electronic data for e-discovery, conducting internal investigations and consolidating data from older to new applications.

The survey shows that data-restoration requests come from across the organisation, with 24% coming from the internal legal department, 22% from IT security and 15% from sales and marketing.
