Akamai completes purchase of DDoS vendor Prolexic
Cloud-based web content and application delivery technology company Akamai has completed the acquisition of DDoS security vendor Prolexic for around US$370 million (AU$411 million).
Under the deal, first announced in December, Akamai has acquired full control of Prolexic.
Prolexic specialises in cloud-based services for protecting data centres from DDoS attacks. The company was founded in 2003.
Akamai CEO Tom Leighton said the company plans to integrate Prolexic technology with its own portfolio to offer a suite of security products designed to protect enterprises at both the web and application layers.
“Our focus is to optimise and secure the ‘entire IP experience’, web or otherwise, and to provide an unparalleled layer of protection against the most sophisticated of attacks without sacrificing site or application performance,” he said.
The company will be targeting “online businesses across all industries” with the integrated security products, he said.
Akamai has revealed it expects the Prolexic acquisition to contribute about US$7-8 million in additional revenue for the March quarter. As a result, the company is now forecasting revenue for the period in the range of US$433-450 million.
