Kaspersky leads anti-malware ranking

Emisoft, Kaspersky, Avira, and BitDefender surpassed all other malware vendors during a real-world protection test conducted by AV-Comparatives.

The four vendors blocked 99.8% of malware thrown at them during the test, compared to just 90.3% for worst-ranked vendor AhnLab.

The test compared the performance of 24 antivirus products with all protection features activated. The various products were exposed to 1260 test cases of live malicious URLs.

According to AV-Comparatives, the results show that the most well-known companies don’t necessarily deliver the best results. McAfee was in eighth place, and Trend Micro was in 12th.

The majority of antivirus products did not deliver any false positives. Trend Micro and McAfee had the highest number of false positives, at 19 and 11 respectively.

Kaspersky’s suite also scored highest on a separate file detection test conducted by AV-Comparatives with a 99.8% detection rate. F-Secure, eScan, Baidu Antivirus, and Fortinet tied for second at 99.6%, and AhnLab again trailed all other companies with a mere 89% rate.

AV-Comparatives noted that the results only reflect the state of the various antivirus suites as of March - because of how quickly the internet environment can change, their relative performance may vary significantly over the coming months.
