Verizon opens advanced SOC in Canberra

Verizon Australia has opened its new Asia–Pacific advanced security operations centre (SOC) in Canberra as part of efforts to expand its cybersecurity capabilities in the region.

The new Asia–Pacific Threat and Analytics Centre will provide real-time insights into cyber threats for public and private sector customers. The facility is US-based telecoms giant Verizon’s tenth SOC worldwide.

Verizon uses the SOCs to monitor its global telecoms network as well as its own and external threat intelligence using a combination of big data analytics and forensic investigation.

The resulting information is combined with added intelligence from over 200 open source data points and multiple commercial feeds from law enforcement agencies and CERT teams worldwide.

“While the ‘good guys’ have a better understanding of the impact a potential breach can have on their stakeholders, business continuity and corporate reputations, there is a constant need to remain a step ahead of the adversaries,” Verizon Regional MD for Australia, New Zealand and India Robert Le Busque said.

“Through this enhanced facility, our security experts will be able to collaborate more effectively with our public and private sector stakeholders to deliver more actionable insights. The increased sharing of intelligence is vital to safeguarding Australia’s physical and online assets.”

In Australia, Verizon provides ICT services to around 75 commonwealth and government agencies. The company has more than 25 federal government customers worldwide. Services provided include managed security services and digital certificate accreditation services.

Late last year, Verizon was also added to the government’s new telecommunications services panel of whole-of-government suppliers.
