Hitachi Ultrastar C15K147 and 15K600 hard drives

Hitachi Global Storage Technologies has announced two Ultrastar 15,000 rpm hard drives: C15K147, a 2.5″ 6 Gbps serial attached SCSI (SAS) hard drive, and the 600 GB 15K600 3.5″ with either 6 Gbps SAS or 4 Gbps fibre channel arbitrated loop (FCAL) interfaces. The drives are industry compliant, self-encrypting and enterprise class.

The 15K600 is suitable for I/O-intensive business processing, decision support, online transaction processing and multi-user applications. 23% faster than its predecessor, it features what is claimed to be the largest cache buffer at 64 MB and is available in 300, 450 and 600 GB capacities.

The C15K147 is licensed to speed in small spaces, with a claimed 70% more space efficiency compared to standard 3.5″ drives. It delivers 11% higher sequential performance and 23% faster seek time compared to the 10,000 rpm drive. Its Advanced Power Management technology uses 50% less power than the company’s similar 3.5″ drives and it is available in 73 and 147 GB with a 64 MB cache buffer.

With reliability of 1.6 million hours mean time between failures, the drives have been designed using technology such as rotational vibration safeguard and workload detection.
