NBN Co running Smart Places trials across Australia
NBN Co is involved in around 40 NBN Smart Places trials across Australia as part of its ongoing commitment to connectivity sustainability.
The NBN Smart Places trials involve exploring the potential of cutting edge technology powered by the NBN network to transform public places for residents and visitors.
At the trial sites the NBN fibre network has been expanded to non-premises locations to power smart city infrastructure such as traffic lights, digital billboards and public Wi-Fi. The NBN network is connected through a single termination device to the infrastructure.
One trial site is PEET’s Brabham Estate 20 km northeast of Perth, where the NBN network is being used to power a smart park complete with public Wi-Fi, smart bins, smart benches and a smart weather station for the location’s energy efficient display home.
NBN Co Executive General Manager for New Developments Andrew Walsh said the company is proud to be working closely with leading developers such as PEET which are at the forefront of constructing livable, sustainable and efficient new communities.
“As part of our commitment to sustainability, NBN Co is setting science-based emission reduction targets and working to achieve greenhouse gas emissions reductions consistent with meeting or exceeding the government’s commitment to net-zero emissions by 2050,” he said.
“We are moving from ambition to action with the NBN Co contracted solar farm under construction in West Wyalong NSW. Once complete, the solar farm will deliver 19% of NBN Co’s power demand — the equivalent of 27,000 homes. It’s one of many practical steps we’re taking to achieving our goal of running Australia’s digital backbone using 100% renewal energy by December 2025.”
