Vodafone to deploy voice over LTE
Vodafone Australia has commenced trials of voice over LTE (VoLTE) using its 4G network, with a goal of launching the technology later this year.
VoLTE involves using 4G networks to carry voice traffic as data flows. LTE technology was originally developed solely for data traffic, so without VoLTE 4G users must switch back to earlier 3G networks while making voice calls.
“Vodafone will be one of the first to launch VoLTE in Australia. It offers the benefit of staying on 4G when receiving or making calls, offering a better data experience,” Vodafone CTO Benoit Hanssen said.
The technology also allows for nearly instantaneous call connection times as well as high-definition voice (HD voice) traffic.
Existing smartphones compatible with VoLTE networks include the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, Samsung’s Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 4 and the Huawei Ascend Y550.
Vodafone said its LTE network now reaches 95% of the metropolitan population, and there are more than 2 million devices connected to the network.
The Global mobile Suppliers' Association (GSA) recently revealed that 80 operators in 42 countries are investing in VoLTE technology.
