Generative AI among the top tech trends for 2022
Generative AI and data fabric technologies are among the top strategic technology trends that organisations will need to explore in 2022, according to Gartner.
The research firm has released its list of the top technology trends to watch in the new year. The emerging trend of generative AI involves machine learning methods that learn about content or objects from their data, and use it to generate brand new, completely original, realistic artefacts.
Gartner predicts that by 2025 generative AI will account for 10% of all data produced, up from less than 1% today.
Meanwhile, data fabrics — flexible, resilient integration of data across platforms and business users, promise the ability to dynamically improve data usage and simplify an organisation’s data integration infrastructure.
Another trend to explore will be the distributed enterprise, which will require CIOs to make major technical and service changes to deliver frictionless work experiences, and for businesses to overhaul their delivery models to embrace distributed services, Gartner said.
Cloud native platforms are also expected to come into the fore in the coming years. Gartner expects that cloud-native platforms will serve as the foundation for more than 95% of new digital initiatives by 2025.
Autonomic systems — an evolution of autonomous systems capable of dynamically modifying their own algorithms without an external software update — and decision intelligence — a discipline used to improve decision-making by explicitly understanding and engineering how decisions are made — will also emerge as key trends, Gartner said.
Other trends identified by the research firm include decision intelligence, composable application architecture, hyperautomation, the cybersecurity mesh and AI engineering.
“With CEOs and boards striving to find growth through direct digital connections with customers, CIOs’ priorities must reflect the same business imperatives, which run through each of Gartner’s top strategic tech trends for 2022,” commented Gartner Research VP David Groombridge.
“CIOs must find the IT force multipliers to enable growth and innovation, and create scalable, resilient technical foundations whose scalability will free cash for digital investments. These imperatives form the three themes of this year’s trends: engineering trust, sculpting change and accelerating growth.”
