Just 1% of Oceania workers get monthly security training

One in five employees across Oceania and Asia who have not received security training are unsure who to contact in the event of a security breach, according to research released by KnowBe4.

A survey of employees in the regions found that 13% of both trained and untrained respondents from Oceania — consisting of Australia, New Zealand and Indonesia — are unsure who to go to during a breach.

Meanwhile only 1% of respondents from Oceania report undertaking monthly training, compared to 25% from Asia.

Even annual security training reduced the percentage of respondents from Oceania and Australia who are unsure of the point of contact to 17%, with this improvement doubling among those undertaking monthly training.

Broken down by industry, hospitality and transportation are faring best at offering monthly training, at 28% and 20% respectively. By comparison, education, health care, pharmaceuticals and — curiously — technology were ranked lowest.

“Monthly training brings about an improved understanding of the terminology and knowledge about why the procedures are in place, as well as the correct channels for communication of threats,” KnowBe4 CEO Stu Sjouwerman commented.

“As the data demonstrates, ensuring that this vital information is communicated regularly is a necessary step in securing an organisation of any size and contributes to creating a stronger security culture.”
