Australia ranks 12th for mobile network quality

Australia ranks 12th in the world in terms of the quality of overall mobile network experience, according to research from crowdsourced mobile network and device data provider Tutela.

Based on speed tests on iOS and Android devices conducted between May and August this year, the research found that Oceania as a continent has the highest overall network quality.

In Australia, 83.9% of the tests met the Excellent Consistent Quality threshold, providing a performance required for intensive use cases like 1080p video streaming, HD group video calling or multiplayer online gaming.

The minimum acceptable values for excellent quality are 5 Mbps download throughput, 1.5 Mbps upload throughput and 50 ms latency.

Australia beat New Zealand in this regard, which came 26th place globally with 77.1% of tests meeting these thresholds. But both countries beat other developed nations including the US and UK.

Australia ranked 22nd globally on the core consistent quality metric, which includes a minimum download throughput of 1.5 Mbps, upload throughput of 500 Kbps and latency of sub 100 ms. More than 97.3% of tests met this threshold. New Zealand was close behind in 25th place.

But no Australian or New Zealand operator made it into the top 25 list on either excellent or core quality. These lists were mostly dominated by European operators, although South Korea’s LG U+ topped the excellent quality leaderboard.

“Our results come at a time when the ... telecoms industry is laser-focused on the deployment of 5G,” Tutela VP Tom Luke said.

“Whilst the next generation of wireless technology will be a vital component of future networks, operators need to ensure that investments continue to be made in existing 4G networks to keep up with the rest of the world.”
