Australians open to an eSIM-only future
Nearly four in five (79%) Australian mobile consumers either support or are open to the idea of smartphones dumping the physical SIM card and going eSIM-only, according to research commissioned by Amdocs.
A survey conducted by global market research firm Dynata found that 53% of consumers want their mobile provider to integrate eSIM into their offerings, compared to just 15% who do not.
Australian respondents named the ability to switch providers and plans in an instant as the biggest benefit of a move to eSIMs (26%), while 21% named the reduction in hassle compared to buying a digital SIM and 14% selected the prospect of moving to a fully digital experience.
Amdocs Group President of Technology and Head of Strategy said the findings are significant in light of Apple’s decision to remove the physical SIM from US models of the iPhone 14 family of smartphones. Future iPhones could dump the physical SIM globally.
“As we continue moving closer to ubiquitous connectivity, this research illustrates the consumer’s enthusiasm for eSIM and the enhancements it brings to the user experience and sustainability,” he said.
“We’re seeing eSIM adoption accelerate across the telecoms sector and we expect this behaviour to continue as consumers and communications service providers become increasingly aware of the benefits and possibilities unleashed by this exciting new technology.”
