IoT and smart city alliance Hypercat opens Aussie chapter
Hypercat — the UK-developed alliance seeking to establish a global standard for the IoT and smart cities — has established a presence in Australia with support from the government.
Hypercat Australia is being established as a non-profit organisation that will be administered by UTS’s Knowledge Economy Institute. The institute is led by Australia’s first industry professor of IoT, Dr Mike Briers.
The government will work with the organisation as part of its recently announced Smart Cities and Suburbs program, according to Assistant Minister for Cities and Digital Transformation Angus Taylor.
“The Commonwealth is exploring relationships with different jurisdictions to build smart cities that improve our lives,” he said.
“Hypercat Australia is one such partnership which will allow a platform to facilitate cutting-edge technology solutions to be applied to urban problems.”
Hypercat was established in the UK three years ago by an alliance of IoT industry players, with support from the British government. It has attracted more than 1000 members including KPMG, Cisco, BT, Symantec and Flexeye.
The alliance has gained support in 47 countries, but Australia marks Hypercat’s first international alliance.
Australian companies and organisations will be able to register an interest in joining up with Hypercat Australia at www.hypercat.io.
