Technology to drive the future of warehousing
Nearly three-quarters of warehouse operators in APAC markets — including Australia — plan to equip their staff with new technology to meet the needs of increased shipping volumes as online sales grow.
Research from tracking and visibility technology developer Zebra Technologies revealed that 72% of warehouse executives plan to raise investment in the Internet of Things and 70% in barcode scanning technologies over the next five years.
Warehouse operators also plan to adopt tablets (69%), big data and analytics (67%) as well as warehouse or truck loading automation technologies (64%).
Tablets are expected to play an increasing role in inventory management, with 86% of respondents indicating that they plan to use tablets with real-time access to warehouse management software.
Investments in new technologies are being driven by the need to reduce transportation costs and delivery times, changes to inventory policies and talent shortages.
The report also predicts ongoing adoption of new-generation warehouse management software and real-time location systems.
Zebra Technologies Senior Technical Director for APAC Wayne Harper said the research indicates that technology will drive the future of warehousing.
“Technology-enhanced warehouses allow businesses to monitor everyday operations in a way that can be measured and analysed,” he said.
“Based on the research, there will be a major shift in this space, with 74% of respondents planning to outfit their warehouse staff with technology and only 24% saying they expect to continue using pen and paper in 2020. Locally, we have seen an increase in interest and subsequently application for handheld and RFID devices to be integrated into warehouses across varying industries.”
