Commvault unveils Active Directory recovery tool

Data protection company Commvault has unveiled a new solution for providing full and automated recovery of data from identity and access solution Microsoft Active Directory.

The new solution, Commvault Cloud Backup and Recovery for Active Directory Enterprise Edition, enables rapid recovery of the Active Directory data forest, which includes users, groups, positions and domain controllers. The solution will enable enterprises to streamline the multi-step process required for Active Directory forest recovery, including tasks for transferring roles from an unavailable domain controller to a functioning one.

The platform provides visual topography views of an organisation’s Active Directory Environment to enable users to quickly identify which domain controllers to restore first and how they should be recovered. Recovery times are significantly accelerated compared to the days or weeks it can take for manual recovery of an Active Directory forest.

Active Directory is often a primary target of cyber attacks because successfully taking the platform offline can grind business operators to a halt. But recovering an Active Directory is traditionally a very difficult, time consuming manual task, according to Commvault Chief Technology and AI Officer Pranay Ahlawat.

“Recovering Active Directory is foundational to maintaining continuous business after a cyber attack, yet traditional methods are too complex and prone to error,” he said. “With automated Active Directory forest recovery, we are giving customers game-changing recovery capabilities, and by integrating this into our unique cyber resilience platform with broad workload support, we’re bringing a new era of continuous business to our customers that nobody can match.”

The solution is expected to launch into general availability within the first half of the year. It will be priced on a per-user basis. It will be the latest addition to the Commvault Cloud Platform.
